Slow Draining Bathroom Sink That Is Not Clogged

A bathroom sink that drains slowly but is not fully clogged usually has a buildup of hair and soap on the stopper or in the trap. Lift the stopper, clean it, and clear the first few inches of the drain with a small drain brush.

If the sink is still slow, check the trap and the vent. If other drains slow down too, the problem is in the line beyond the sink.

Four fixes to try in order

1

Clean the stopper

Lift it out, wipe off hair and slime, and rinse it.

2

Brush the drain

A plastic drain brush pulls hair from the first few inches of pipe.

3

Clean the trap

Put a bucket under the trap, unscrew the slip nuts and clear the buildup.

4

Flush with hot water

Hot tap water, not boiling, helps carry loose soap out of the line.

Why a sink drains slowly instead of clogging

Soap scum and hair stick to the pipe wall and build a narrow channel. Water still flows but slowly, and the sink drains with a gurgle as air squeezes through the narrowed pipe.

Toothpaste, shaving residue and cosmetic products add to the coating. Over weeks the pipe narrows until a small piece of hair finishes the job and the sink stops completely.

Avoid chemical drain cleaners

Liquid drain cleaners are caustic and can damage older metal pipe and plastic fittings. They also leave a hazardous standing water if the clog stays, which makes it dangerous for the plumber who follows.

Enzyme cleaners work slowly and are safer for pipes, but they do not clear a heavy buildup. A cable or a jet is the dependable fix, and hydro jetting cleans the pipe wall when a coating keeps coming back.

Caldwell homes, old drains and the city line

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates show that about 56 percent of Caldwell's homes were built in 2000 or later, and those houses generally have plastic drains with long, shallow runs. About 29 percent were built before 1980, and drains from that era may be galvanized or cast iron that scale and narrow over decades.

If the lowest drain in the house is slow too, the main line may be partly blocked. If neighbors on your street have the same problem, the City of Caldwell sewer emergency line is (208) 949-1278, and the city's sewer system includes more than 300 miles of main.

Fixing a trap or a vent follows Idaho's adopted 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC).

Know your stopper

Pop-up stoppers lift with a rod behind the faucet, and the rod connects to a pivot arm at the drain tailpiece. Hair snags on that arm, and cleaning it is often the whole fix.

Push-and-seal stoppers lift out by hand, and a spring inside collects slime. Soak the stopper in vinegar and rinse it, and check the seal for cracks before you put it back.

A simple monthly routine

Once a month, remove the stopper, wipe it clean and run hot water for a minute. A drain brush costs very little and keeps hair out of the first few inches of pipe, where most slow sinks start.

A hair catcher in the shower and the sink also helps. Those small habits stretch the time between professional visits.

When a slow sink is a warning

Slow drains in more than one fixture, gurgling in the toilet when the sink drains or a sewer smell from the floor drain point to the main line. That is the time to stop adding water and book sewer line cleaning before the line backs up.

A plumber can also run a camera to see whether the slowdown is a coating, roots or a low spot. A sink that is slow after every cleaning is a sign the line needs more than a quick fix.

Questions Caldwell homeowners ask

The buildup is probably deeper in the trap or the branch line. Clean the trap, and if that fails, cable the line.

It can loosen light buildup, but it does not clear a heavy coating of hair and soap.

Yes. A blocked vent can slow a drain and make it gurgle. A plumber can check the vent.

It is a straightforward job with a bucket and a wrench. Do not force old corroded nuts.

If your lowest drain is slow and neighbors have the same issue, call the City of Caldwell sewer line at (208) 949-1278. If only your house is affected, the problem is on your side of the connection.

Yes. See the page for Middleton and the service area page.
