What drain cleaning covers
Drain cleaning clears a blockage and restores flow through the pipe. For sinks, tubs, showers and floor drains the plumber feeds a motorized cable through the trap and into the line, and the cutting head breaks up grease, hair, soap scum and roots.
A clog in one fixture usually sits in that fixture's branch line. When several fixtures back up at once, the blockage is farther along, often in the main line that leaves the house, and the work shifts to a larger machine or to hydro jetting.
Sewer backup: what to do first
If water or sewage is rising in the lowest drain of the house, the main line is blocked. Stop every water use, including the washer and dishwasher, because each gallon you add has nowhere to go.
Pull rugs and boxes off wet floors, keep people away from standing water, and do not use drain cleaner, which can burn skin and rarely clears a full backup. If neighbors on your street are also backing up, call the City of Caldwell sewer emergency line at (208) 949-1278 in addition to calling us.
Signs a drain is about to fail
Gurgling after a flush
Air pushed past a partial blockage bubbles up through the nearest trap, often in a tub or floor drain.
Slow drains in more than one place
One slow sink is a branch problem. Two or three slow fixtures point to the main line.
Water pooling around a shower drain
Shower and tub drains pack with hair and soap, and water rises before it fails completely.
Sewer smell in the basement
A dry trap or a partial blockage can push gas out through a floor drain.
Toilet bubbles when the washer drains
Both fixtures share a line, and a partial clog shows in the weakest trap.
Repeat clogs every few weeks
Roots, a belly in the pipe or heavy grease coating need more than a quick cable. See sewer camera inspection.
Kitchen sink clogs and grease
Kitchen drains clog from grease, food scraps and coffee grounds that cool and stick to the pipe wall. The sink fills slowly, then stops, and the dishwasher may back up into the sink because it drains through the same line.
The City of Caldwell asks residents and businesses to keep cooking oil and grease out of sinks, garbage disposals, toilets and floor drains, and to wipe pans into the trash before washing. Its pretreatment program also warns against additives that claim to dissolve grease. A cable and, for heavy buildup, a jet, clears what is already stuck.
Which method clears which clog
| Where it is stuck | Typical method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom sink or tub | Small hand cable or drum machine | Hair and soap, usually fast |
| Kitchen sink | Drum machine, sometimes a jet | Grease may need a second pass |
| Toilet and nearby drains | Closet auger or larger cable | Foreign objects need retrieval |
| Main line from the house | Sectional machine, then camera | Roots and bellies may need repair |
| Floor drain or laundry standpipe | Cable with a drain cutter | Lint and soap pack tightly |
Drain full and not moving?
Call the 24/7 line. A plumber is dispatched with the earliest available slot, with a clear price before work starts.
Why a cable is not always the whole answer
A cable punches a hole through a clog, and a thick coating of grease can close back over it within weeks. That is when a jet, which scours the pipe wall with water, is a better fit. A camera shows whether the pipe has roots, a break or a low spot that holds water.
If a drain clogs again within a month of a cleaning, ask for a camera look. The sewer line repair page explains what the camera can find and what the options are.
What decides the price of drain cleaning
A small bathroom clog and a main line blockage are very different jobs, so the quote is set after the plumber hears where the water is backing up.
Homeowner policies often exclude sewer backup unless a rider is added, so ask your insurer before you need it.
Caldwell sewer service, grease rules and cleanouts
The City of Caldwell operates the public sanitary sewer system through the Wastewater Treatment Plant, a division of Public Works, with more than 300 miles of sewer lines and 16 lift stations. The plant publishes a sewer emergency line at (208) 949-1278. A blockage inside your house is the owner's to clear, but a backup that affects several homes on a street can be in the public main.
The city's pretreatment program, which runs the grease program, says licensed plumbers should design and install grease traps and interceptors for businesses, and that used oil should go to a licensed hauler or recycler. Residents who find the cleanout cap on the side of the house have a faster path for the plumber when a main line backs up.
Clearing a clog is maintenance, but replacing a trap, a cleanout or a length of drain pipe is plumbing work under the 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) as Idaho amends it.

Drain line leaks, yard drains and floor drain grates
A drain line that leaks behind a wall or under a slab shows up as damp drywall, a musty smell or a patch of warm, wet flooring. A camera and a water test find it, and the repair is a section replacement, not a cleaning.
Yard drains and floor drains in garages and basements clog with silt, leaves and lint. Corroded or stuck drain grates are removed with the right bar and the drain cleared below them.
How the visit runs
Where is it stuck?
The plumber asks which fixtures are slow and finds the nearest cleanout or trap access.
Clear the line
A cable or jet is run until water moves freely, with a rinse to confirm.
Look for the cause
If roots, bellies or breaks are suspected, a camera look is offered.
Plain next steps
You hear what caused the clog and how to stop it from returning.
Drain cleaning questions in Caldwell
Yes. Drain emergencies do not wait for business hours, and the line is answered around the clock. A full backup into a tub, shower or floor drain is treated as urgent, and the dispatcher books the earliest visit available.
While you wait, stop using water, open a window if there is a sewer odor, and keep children and pets out of any standing water.
Grease and food scraps stick to the pipe wall and narrow the line. The City of Caldwell asks that cooking oil and grease stay out of drains, and a cable followed by a jet clears the coating that a simple plunge cannot.
It can damage older metal and plastic and is hazardous to handle. It also seldom clears a full backup and leaves caustic water that a plumber then has to work around.
That points to the main line. Stop water use and call, since the cable or jet needs to run from the cleanout, not from a fixture.
Yes. Lint and soap pack tight in these drains, and a cutter head on a small machine clears them.
Roots enter older clay or cracked pipe joints and slow the line. A camera shows them, and a cutter or jet clears them until a repair is scheduled.
Yes. See the page for Middleton, and give the dispatcher your address on the call.
